A former French colony in Northern Africa, Algeria gained its independence after a brutal guerrilla war in 1962. Islam now dominates the region. For the past 50 years, Christians have been an oppressed minority, and the church now faces the threat of extinction. In 2006, the Algerian government instituted a new ordinance called 06-03 limiting the practice of all religions except Islam.
