The Mahdia Mosque in Tunisia

On Friday, April 13, excrement was found in the central mosque of the Tunisian coastal city of Mahdia, southeast of Tunis. The incident happened after the decision by the Court of First Instance of Medenine to sentence Ramzi Ibcha, the man accused of desecrating the Ben Guerdane Quran, to four years in jail and a fine of 480 dinars.

According to the imam of the Mahdia Mosque and head of the Islamic association “Jamiaat Al Furqaan,” an “unknown extremist group” entered the mosque after the first prayer of the day and threw human excrement on the prayer mats. The group allegedly climbed down the wall of the mosque, opened the main gate, and entered the prayer room.

The imam stated that Tunisian authorities must intervene to look into the incident, and called upon locals of Mahdia to remain calm in the face of such provocations. The incident is being investigated by the Tunisian justice system.
