On Egyptian television on a Liberal talk show called ‘Egypt today’, Tawfiq Okasha showing a video of a young Tunisian man who has converted to Christianity being slaughtered for his faith. While they were slaughtering him and were chanting, “Let Allah be avenged on the polytheist apostate”; “Allah empower your religion, make it victorious against the polytheists”; “Allah, defeat the infidels at the hands of the Muslims”; “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger.” Than they shouted “Allah Akbar”, and began to slaughter.
When I have read this article it really hit me with what had happen on that day on the young person who got slaughtered. Tunisia at this moment is rapidly growing with Islamists fundamentalist or what they are known as the “Salafists”. Religious freedom in Tunisia doesn’t really exist where people can go to a church for example and do Christian practices. Speaking with a Tunisian pastor in a country where we met, I have asked him, ‘what is the purpose of these movements uprising all of a sudden’. He answered by saying “People are scared for freedom of religion because of the sense of morality being pushed aside and of control within the country”.
Thinking what this Tunisian pastor said, people in the Arab world still do not understand the different with Christianity and the western world. True Christianity is the only faith that teaches to love one’s own enemies and helping the helpless, the western world has done damage in the world like any other country but Jesus made it clear that we do not put our faith in these things but we must always put our faith in God who is the rewarder and the hearer of all things.
What happen to this young Tunisian man was a deep lose but also a gain for his soul in Christ. Throughout the history of Christianity the same act of killing of Christians is being repeated today, this is not something new but something that has always existed. This makes a clear picture in how Christ attracted people; it was through his death that the glory came, and in what this young man done for not recanting his faith was a symbol of love.
Today if you read this please keep in Tunisia in your prayer but also to stand up for the freedom of humanity. Humanity lives and has a right to believe in what they want and how they want as long it is moral to society, taking a life of another is the biggest act of hatred and such hatred should not be practised.
