In my trip to Algeria God is transforming the nation by bringing some freedom to Christianity to people by allowing them to have Churches under the protestant federation. The impact is being made within the Berbers, families will accept Christianity and making it their own personal faith, also within the Arab Algerian community there has been changes, for example a guy who I met wanting to become a jihadist and ended up accepting Christ because of the teaching of Jesus by saying, “Love your enemies”, but there has always been friction with the Arabs and Berbers.
The Berbers in the North Africa live today in villages just outside of certain cities, where lack of communication is available but even in that Christianity has made impact within the Berber tribes today within all of North Africa, there have been critics who said to me that the purpose of why Christianity is prospering in those region is because of material possession, understanding this didn’t make me disagree completely because in some cases that has happened, as the Berber tribe live in poverty today. This is not only why people become Christians, in the Berber region today the leaders who lead the church today are Berber people themselves or Arabs who have come from major cities.
Berbers have had conflicts in the past with the Arab people because in the past North Africa was invaded by the Islamic regime and was conquered and were forced to become Muslims. Berbers look at this as the Arabs robbing them of their culture and to adapt a new culture by force. Critics will argue by saying it was also the Christians who imposed their religion on people by force in time of Constantine who was the Emperor of Rome, this fact is correct but real Christianity is the faith where people accept Christ all on their free will and by embracing the faith, in their walk with God they learn to love all people from all sort of life. Berbers that I have encountered with practise just that and this has attracted Arab people across North Africa today.
Being in a Church in the Berber tribe of Algeria made me learn that when no matter what background we are from one must learn that there is neither division within the body of Christ. God is moving within the North Africa region where no one hears about but powerful stories happen every day in these countries and also suffering within the Church.
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34-35)
